Hi all, Regarding the 9 wk. old baby with pasty, foul stools, I still need
help. Brief hx: exclusively bf (but always somewhat gassy) till 6 weeks,
mom gave rice cereal for 3 nites. Baby got worse, Mom stopped but in the 3
wks. since it has been horrible. Baby has horrific gas pains, passes very
foul gas, the initial stool from cereal was thick brown and smelly. Went 1
wk without a bm. Had huge brown pasty one. Had her 3rd bm on Fri. (huge,
pasty and so foul). Mom noticied a big improvement after the bm for the
weekend but baby awoke, screaming a 2am this morning. Mom gave suppository
and baby just had lg.stool, still foul but more yellow & seedy. It's been 3
wks. since the cereal and Mom is so afraid she's ruined baby's system. She
stopped all dairy 1 wk. ago. Mom's diet is so bland. My question is what
would make the stools so thick, pasty and smelly? Her Dr. says baby has
colic and the best thing would be Enfamil-low iron. Mom is exclusively
breastfeeding but very tempted. She can't stand seeing the baby is such
pain during feedings. We've discussed all the obvious. If it were
overactive let-down or lactose imbalance, stools would be green and
watery-not thick and pasty. Please give me some ideas. E-mail me privately
as I'm heading to Maine to visit family. TIA, Kym Dunton, RN, BA, IBCLC,
