yes, nikki, the jury is still out; jack newman believes it is unnecessary to
fortify milk for preemies, says there is insufficient evidence to do it. i
have posted before about sweden, where they universally breastfeed or
breastmilk feed preemies, don't use fortification and are rather puzzled
about why we are putting formula in the breastmilk.

that's the important thing to remember when looking at studies like this one,
showing how much better breastmilk is for preemies than formula - the "stuff"
used for fortification is formula. so if we are worried about "just one
dose," then we are giving the baby formula with the breastmilk. calling it
"fortifier" won't change what it is.
