Dear Friends:
Milk fever is the slight elevation (up to about 100.4 ) in maternal
temperature when the milk volume increases around day 3 postpartum. I took
care of too many ladies whose temperatures went up on day 3 postpartum which
also happened to be day 3 post-cesarean section. Most physicians and
osteopaths at the hospital where I worked would separate mother and baby, and
put the mother on IV antibiotics....just to treat a milk fever!
Milk fever is an older term, as is milk leg which is a
thrombophlebitis that would occur around the same time as secondary
lactogenesis began. Am I really that old to be familiar with these terms?
Warmly, Nikki
