So far, all anticonvulsants are implicated in doubling or tripling the
rate of birth defects if taken during pregnancy. The risk of having a
baby with birth defects is elevated in women with epilepsy even if they
are not on anticonvulsant medications. The Epilepsy Foundation
(http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org) is currently promoting a Women &
Epilepsy initiative, one facet of which is a pregnancy outcome registry
which is an attempt to quantify these risks more accurately.
