When we brought our first child home in 1989, from the adoption
agency (the answer to our prayers! That is still one of his nicknames),
our dear retired neighbor and father of 5 ambled over and said, "Oh, I
see you brought the boss home". Inwardly the hair on my neck stood on
end and I thought, "What's he talking about? We're the parents, this is
the baby." But we soon found out Mr. Johnson was right. Whenever the
baby cried or needed anything, we jumped up to meet the need. It is sad
to discuss parenting an infant in this way...who is the boss, who has
control....Any loving parent wants to meet the needs of the child.
Didn't Jesus say something about how he came not to be ministered unto,
but to minister to others?
Then on the other hand, it is sad to see wimpy parents with a 3
year old in control of the whole family. Parenting is indeed a
challenge, but also such a blessing. As children grow, you learn to
"switch gears" and adapt, and grow along with them.
