Gee, today everything reminds me of something else. Our newest Leader
was commenting just yesterday about her recent pregnancy and
homebirth, for which she was attended by 2 midwives, one from a lay
background and one from a medical background. At a prenatal checkup,
when they asked her how everything was going, she commented that she
had really ferocious heartburn. The medically-based midwife began
telling her about such home remedies as papaya (a new one to me), and
how to use them. The lay midwife simply said, "Is it a problem for
you?" "No," the Leader responded. "But you asked me what was new.
The heartburn is new."
"You know," she said when she told us the story, "The one midwife was
ready to jump in with solutions. The other midwife identified with
where I was. I had heartburn, yes, but it wasn't so bad that I wanted
to do anything about it." Often, all we need to provide is a safe
place for moms to complain...
