Someone mentioned the other day about withholding colostrum, delay in
initiating BF. Rang a bell.
See: "Initiating breastfeeding: a world survey of the timing of postpartum
breastfeeding. Morse, J.M., Jehle, C. and Gamble, D. 1990. Int J Nurs
Stud. 27(3), 303-313.
"Data obtained from 120 cultures showed that in 50 cultures this delay in
implementing BF was more than two days. In many groups, substitute
prelacteal feeds were given, while in others, practices such as the use of
purgatives exacerbated the risk of dehydration in the infant."
Interesting article with some warnings on cultural stereotyping.
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
