I have seen the Jan 99 American Baby but haven't read it.
I did skim through the Nov 98 issue's article "Sex , Money, and Diapers,
what every new dad should know" which includes
paragraphs beginning with "breastfeeding is not easy" and "learn how to
bottle fed baby" There is also an exert across two pages
saying "Romance your wife. Write love notes. Give her flowers. And be
supportive when she tells you breastfeeding hurts." Along with
this is a color drawing of a breastfeeding mom. Mom is naked except for
holding a towel. Her mouth is open in a scream. The baby is
sitting beside her head turned and latched and is holding up a dumb bell in
his hand.
Besides the over emphasis on the pain I believe this is what Jack refers to
as the "breastfeeding mom as harlot"
theme.
At least two good things will come out of this. 1 It will make for a good
lecture slide to show anti-breastfeeding themes and 2. reminds
me its been over 2 months since I last got my wife flowers.
BTW I only picked up this issue because I wanted to read the article on
flying with a baby. I have to say I didn't agree with what was
said there either.
I'd write to them but I didn't get any response the last time in spurt of
Marsha Walker's letter. Yoou would think they would respond when
a ped says he doesn't want that kind of misinformation in his waiting room.
