As I prepare to give an inservice to the nursing staff of my 14-bed LDRP
OB unit, I could use input of all the creative minds out there in Lactnet
Land. One of the issues I am to address is the nightly parade of babies
to the nursery so "mom can get her rest" and baby returns in several
hours with a pacifier. My feeling is that we need to teach the parents
how to deal with a fussy newborn who is trying to adjust to life on this
new planet. The nurses do not buy this--they say, "what are we
supposed to say to the teary eyed mom who is exhausted and her baby
cries whenever he is placed in the crib, alone." (Duh, of course this poor
little thing will cry--he wants his mommy). So if anyone has some lines
that seem to work with the nurses and or the parents, I'd greatly
appreciate hearing them.
Also, the hospital policy is to not allow babies to sleep in their mommy's
bed (which would solve the whole problem-let mom nurse and sleep).
Any suggestions of how to allow this in a way that the legal department
would consider "safe". I do have McKenna's research.
Thanks, Terri, RN, IBCLC
