I recently saw my oldest breastfeeding patient. She is now 3 ½ years.
(My previous oldest breastfed patient has retired, at least while mom is
pregnant.)
Anyway this 3 ½ y/o's mom now tells me that when she (the child) was 3
days old mom was engorged and cracked and had given up when the mail arrived
with Scientific American and Jack's "How Breast Milk Protects Newborns"
Mom read it and decided to keep breastfeeding.
Thanks Jack.
BTW I wasn't her doc then, I was in residency. I saw this patient for the
first time over a year ago and when mom reluctantly said she was still
breastfeeding I said plainly "she is only 2 years old" .
