I am concerned about the woman w/ HTN whose doc put her on Nifedipine, not
because it's not safe w/ BF (it is, as has already been noted), but because
it seems to me that it's an odd 1st step (if, in fact, it was the first
step). I have treated tons of pts for HTN, and there are loads of
non-pharmacologic therapies to consider first, and also nifedipine is not
currently considered first-line med tx for HTN. Did the patient involved get
advice about diet, exercise, and relaxation techniques? I have recommended a
book called "Healing Mind, Healthy Woman" by Alice Domar to many women, w/
excellent results. I like this book because it is straightforward, medically
accurate w/o being too tech-y, not too touchy-feely, and offers lots of
different ways to achieve physiologic relaxation.
If meds are in fact necessary, beta-blockers might be a good choice, and are
also safe w/ BF.
