Dear Dr. Mira, I'd treat the FPs just like a mom who calls me for advice on
how to wean. I tell her (answer her question) then I explore the WHY she
wants to wean. More often than not, by the end of the conversation her
problem is on it's way to being solved and weaning isn't necessary. By
giving her what she has asked for first, barriers are lowered and solutions
can be explored. Maybe you can use the same approach and actually manage
to cover what you want them to hear.
one of the most frequent reason to want to wean is going back to work, so
many moms don't realize they can give some bottles and some breastfeeding.
If expressing doesn't appeal to them I explain how replacement bottles of
abm will eventually bring about full weaning, but for that mo or 2 or 3
the baby is receiving some breastmilk and they will still be healthier.
Moms respond to that. So many think it is all or nothing. Sincerely, Pat
in SNJ
