We have a puzzle. A woman who bf 5 children, more than 6 mo each, now bf
her 3wk old. R breast doing fine, baby gaining well, good latch (per peer
counselor) and L breast only makes a few drops. Has been engorged on the L
side, and the engorgement is getting to be less. No pain, no lumps, and
according to mom almost no milk from L breast. She has tried to pump to
stimulate, to no avail, though I don't know how consistent she was with the
pumping.
This morning the PC and I referred her back to the LC at the hospital whom
she has been in contact with. She will get a physical contact then
hopefully the LC will call the primary care MD, as we also will be calling
her doctor to say maybe some assessment for something else going on...
Odd that this is the first time she has had any bf problems with any of
her children.
Any thoughts? M.Scott, RD,MA,IBCLC in NH
