You're right about the internet access thing being old. The Urban Legends site
on the Mining Company has a good piece on it:

has good stuff on chain emails such as the petition about the plight of Afghan
women, too.
Another excellent resource is at

Livermore National Labs). The CIAC page expains exactly why the internet
access rumor is not true (you'll need to scroll 3/4 way down the page). You
can also learn how to spot an internet hoax and how to validate virus
warnings.
