Hi all,
In "clicking through" my Lactnet posts, I noticed quite a few "goat's
milk" topics. Since we just sold and bought a house this week, I did
not have time to read, but did want to pass on a bit of info.
A couple of years ago, I read an article (not a clue where, now), that
during the 50's, when atom bombs were still being tested in the desert,
that the winds scattered fall out into (I think) the Northwest part of
this country. Milk from goats in the area was sold around the US. It
was later determined that the amount of radiation in the milk was a
precursor to thyroid cancer, which developed in many adults in the 80s.
Interestingly enough, although my mom gave birth to me at home in 1956
(by choice), she did not choose to breastfeed me. According to her, I
could not tolerate anything but goat's milk, which was tried when I was
about 3 months old.
At age 29, I was diagnosed with thyroid CA.
One never knows what is lurking in the milk of other species (including
bovine) or on vegetable protein. Who knows what will be discovered in
30 years?
By the way, I am now 43 and quite healthy. Also I'm very glad that my
babies received breastmilk.
Happy Valentines Day,
Sandy Hess
