Greetings Lactnetters:

I have been away for quite some time working and studying hard in grad school.
Will be doing a community health project on breastfeeding at the WIC office, so I
get to start researching something I enjoy again. Got a call from a client the
other day and want to give her the most up to date info available. She has a 3 mo.
old baby who is exclusively bf and feels she needs to start taking either Zoloft or
St. John's Wort or some other serotonin reuptake inhibitor. I encouraged her to
exercise, cut out caffeine, watch her diet, etc., but she wants to know how safe
SJW or Zoloft would be. I tried searching the archives and it does not even let me
get to the server, it just keeps searching for the server. I saw Dr. Newman's post
asking about citalopram and asking why not try something we know to be safe like
sertraline (Zoloft). If anyone has any info on SJW it would be helpful. I also
took Dr. Hertz's suggestion and searched through medline, but came up with only 9
articles under breastfeeding and St. John's Wort and they were not appropriate.
Any ideas?

Thanks, Kim Hansen, RN, BSN, IBCLC
