Since the topic of lupus has come up, I have a different question about it.
Yesterday in my postpartum drop-in breastfeeding group at the hospital, one of
our patients came with her 5-day old, second baby, who is having inadequate
intake and output. She has a history of lupus, but has had no flare-ups in
years and is on no meds. She had a repeat c-section and there are, I think,
other factors that may be involved in the poor milk transfer. I will see her
in a couple of days again. Showed her breast compression, and it did seem to
result in somewhat more swallowing, still not great. Unfortunately, she goes
to our least breastfeeding-friendly/knowledgeable pediatric group, and I won't
be surprised if she returns supplementing. Baby looks good, by the way.
Didn't nurse the first one long. Reports that she was "very sick and was told
to wean" (not lupus-related). Anyway, my question is: does anyone have either
experience or references that might indicate a connection between lupus and
inadequate milk production? I just want to have some idea whether this could
be a factor. TIA. Miriam Levitt RN, IBCLC
