Rob,
1. Fingerfeeding is often helpful when baby has a lousy suck, depending
on the cause. I advise the mom to fingerfeed until baby is no longer
'starving' and is sucking well, then immediatly try to latch baby on.
2. I like the Nuk origional latex orthodontic step 2 (for 6-18 mo old
babies) medium flow nipple. Whew! All this description is necessary
because they have a zillion varieties! The reason I like this nipple is
that it has a very fat base. I advise moms to tickle baby's lips with
the bottle nipple, wait for a huge open mouth, then pull the baby on
like they would on the breast, and make sure the baby gets his lips on
the fat base of the nipple. This way baby is practicing sucking with a
lot of teat in his mouth, just as he will need to on the breast. Have
had quite a few breast refusing babies eventually take the breast after
being bottlefed this way when mom was unable to finger or cup feed.
3. No, there's nothing that chocolate won't cure, except maybe obesity!
