I have seen several posts recently about "spoiled or smelly" breastmilk. I
suggest that when freezing breastmilk, the Mom be sure not to sit the
containers on the bottom of the freezer or against the walls. There are
heating coils in the self defrosting freezing units which heat up very quickly
to melt the frost which then drains into the back of the freezer and down to a
drain pan. If the milk is sitting on this floor or against the wall where the
defrosting occurs, over and over again, then it may began to lose quality. I
suggest to Moms tht they sit the bottles or bags of expressed breastmilk
inside a covered container which has one of those blue ice packs on the
bottom. That way the expressed milk will stay at a more optimal and even
temperature without defrosting and refreezing. I also suggest they store milk
cartons of water frozen into ice in the freezer to help maintain a freezing
temperature when the door is opened and closed throughout the day. And never
store it in the door of the freezer. Also, in the refrigerator, make sure the
milk is not directly under or against the light bulb.
I have found when Moms call me with concerns about the milk being " bad", it
usually is not being stored under the best circumstances.
