Dear folks:
This in response to the c/section moms. I attended 4 hours of presentation
by Kirsten Uvnas-Moberg at the International Breastfeeding and Human Lactation
Conference in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Moberg is a physiologist, and an expert on
oxytocin and GI hormones, which she has spent her career studying. She said
that some mechanism, she didn't know what, was disturbed when there was a
cesarean, which resulted in less oxytocin secretion. Consequently, the milk
volume increase is delayed. There appears to be more to the story than merely
removing the placenta.
She was fabulous. Attractive, articulate, brilliant scientist and warm,
entertaining woman all in one. What a model!
She said, based on her research, that all analgesia in labor, including
pudendal blocks, disturbs spontaneous breastfeeding and results in increased
temperatures and more crying in the newborn. I could have listened to her talk
for another 4 hours easily. I highly recommend her as a speaker to any
conference. Warmly, Nikki Lee
