Dear Lactnetters,
Thank you all for responding to my post re: the mom who was instructed to wean
as soon as possible because it would negatively affect the baby's speech
development. I really wanted to call and talk to the OT personally but the
mom preferred that I not do that because she still must deal with this woman
on a continuous basis. At my request, however, the mom did discuss this with
her and fired off the info that I had given re the positive effects of
breastfeeding on muscle development and all the many wonderful benefits
especially for preemies. She also requested documentation for me--it was the
first thing I had asked for. (This mom is college educated, diplomatic and a
very secure, over 40 woman) As we suspected, this OT had NO documentation and
even back tracked by saying that her statement really pertained to bottle
feeding. (Why she would even mention this to a mother who has ONLY breastfeed
this baby and her two others as well is a mystery.) Anyway, the mom also told
her that she was very concerned that she (the OT) was giving out incorrect
info to new moms who might follow her advice and wean because they simply
didn't know better. I got the impression from mom that the OT was surprised
at her expertise in the matter. At any rate, I don't think she'll give out
this kind of advise without doing some research in the future.
Thank you again for all the good info and comments!
