I have seen far too many women receive Depo Provera and wind up with a
drastically reduced milk supply.  It doesn't seem to matter whether it is
given soon after birth or 6 weeks later.  I have seen it cause lowered milk
supply no matter when it is given in some women.  I have also talked to
mothers for whom it had no effect on their milk supply at all.  I do like Dr.
Jack's suggestion of giving the progesterone only pill for a month.  It can be
stopped if necessary.  I also agree that, if EBF, the mother should not need
this form of birth control anyway?

Unfortunately, many women -- especially low income women -- are led to believe
that they cannot leave the hospital until they get "their" shot.  Other
mothers are told that they have nothing to worry about.  It will not effect
their milk supply.  We see the aftermath when the mother comes into the clinic
for formula because her supply will no longer meet the baby's needs.
