Cathy.......thanks so much for writing me. It was nice to read your story. One
thing I am finding difficult to adjust to is the types of clients our hospital
attracts. Many women are young, not married and so many of them do not choose
to breastfeed. So, even though I will be working L&D, PP and WBN, I think it
will be hard to gather many contact hours helping women breastfeed.

Some of the practices at this hospital SAY they promote breastfeeding and
bonding, but their practices just clearly do NOT. This is really frustrating
to me. I don't want to make any waves in the beginning and don't want to be a
trouble maker, but I surely would like to see some changes there. Just not
sure how to go about it. I'm still in orientation so I'm still the new kid on
the block. Working on my being a childbirth educator will be helpful and after
I get my certification the end of this year, I think that will hold a lot of
weight. But many of those nurses have been there for so many years and
decades, it'll be hard to retrain them to think differently, you know??

Anyway, was nice to hear from you and I look forward to hearing from everyone
on this list and to gain some insights how other facilities handles certain
situations.

Vickie, RN
