I am mentioning this new policy statement simply because of the effect
circumcision has on breastfeeding. I know many of you on Lactnet are either
prenatal educators or care for new parents in the prenatal or inpatient
setting. You may get questions about this. I don't want to get into a
discussion of circumcision on Lactnet. Comments need to be on private
e-mail.
That said, yesterday, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a new
Circumcision Policy Statement stating that existing medical data does not
support the routine circumcision of male newborns. The press release can
be viewed at
www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/marcircum.htm
The entire policy statement is at www.aap.org/policy/re9850.html
This morning's Dr. Dean Edell show was all about circumcision and had
NOCIRC's president on the show. He has posted photos of newborn
circumcision procedures on his website at www.healthcentral.com
Again, keep the discussion off of Lactnet. If you have comments, you can
e-mail me privately.
