In my neck of the tall grass prairie, we raise beef cattle, who nurse on
mama cow for about 4 months and are nibbling on grass along the way, maybe
some grain supplements. Then (this breaks my heart), the calves are
suddenly weaned by being physically separated from mama cow. You can go
outside on a quiet night and hear all of these little calves and mama cows
mooing for one another on the cattle ranches that surround our home for
miles.
