Dear Dr. Abdun-Nur,
I had three thoughts concerning your patient with h/o eczema and
eczema currently. Are you confident she is not also having a
secondary infection, either bacterial or candidal, on her nipples?
Second, is something in the milk exacerbating or causing these Sxs?
For example, could mom's skin be sensitive to cow milk proteins or soy
proteins in her milk that baby tolerates just fine? Lastly, does mom
take supplements and/or construct her diet so that extra skin-repair
type building blocks are available? I always think of the example I
was given in school (Baylor College of Medicine) about burn patients
needing extra zinc to heal their skin, and once this was provided,
healing progressed better. She might benefit from extra Vitamins A and
D, fatty acids, and zinc. Just a thought.
Respectfully,
Rowena Tucker PA,LLLL,IBCLC
