I always thought I didn't care for this magazine, but the Jan 99 issue had
some scary advice for new parents. I know these new parents are very open to
any and all suggestions to "fix" their "problems", but some go beyond the
extreme. In a separate section in the article on getting your baby to sleep at
night (which included its own gross misinformation) parents were advised to
cut out night feedings in their efforts towards uninterrupted sleep. The
method? Cut back each night on the time at the breast while at the same time
space out feedings. So night 1 feed every 3 hrs for 10 min. Next night 3hrs,
15 mins for 9 minutes, next night 3 1/2 hr for 8 minutes (are we grinding our
teeth yet?) will there be a mad dash to buy stopwatches? Where do these
bizarre ideas come from? Are these articles not even reviewed by intelligent
people?
As far as worrying about sleeping through the night, we should be telling
people its good preparation for having teenagers (whose social life doesn't
usually begin till after my bedtime)
Susan Wittner, LLLL, hoping I don't LOL if a mom asks about that method she
read about in parenting
