Margery,
Small sized portions of EBM are important for the NICU population due to the
small amounts these babes receive at each feed. Some babies are getting a few
ccs at each gavage feed. You may only use an ounce or two per shift. Having a
days supply in a masons jar would entail too many openings of this one jar
thereby increasing the chances of contamination. When writing our protocols
for Expressing for the Hospitalized or Premature Baby we followed the Human
Milk Banking Assoc. Guidelines written specifically to address this
population. I believe they did specifically state that all the milk pumped at
one session should go into its own container and not be added to. They also
addressed packaging into feeding sized portions and the use of glass or hard
plastic as the best containers for storage.

Sincerely,
