Hello,
I am looking for some information on starting out as a lactation source in my
community. I had been working at the local WIC program for a number of years
and am now seeing a need for a lactation resource in my area. I was wondering
if any of you wise wonderful people could give me some advice on how to go
about this task. I have very little knowledge of the business world and am a
bit nervous. Any information would be helpful but I have the most concerns
about liability - (do I need some type of medical malpractice to protect
myself and where do I get it if I do?), billing - (how much is the average
charge and do any of you have any success with reimbursement from insurance ?)
Mostly the business and marketing basics. I was also wondering about how most
people go about getting their breastfeeding consultancy contact hours for the
IBCLC exam. I am more than half way there but it seems that now that I am not
working for the WIC clinic that the only way to complete these hours is to
work as a lactation consultant. I am a Dietitian and have completed the UCLA
Extention CLE course, but is this enough of a background for me to branch out
on my own? Thanks in advance, Lactnet has been a wonderful source of
information for me and I appreciate all the time everyone puts into their
replies.
