Martha,
Breastfeeding and Human Lactation, by Riordan & Auerbach, have
information on viruses and heat treatment of milk. Heat treating will
kill the HIV, but the process is involved and in order to keep the
immunoglobins and other componants as close to fresh milk as possible you
neeed to maintain the temperature at 56 degrees C. You need a control
bottle with a thermometer inserted to make sure the milk is constantly at
56 degrees C and that needs to be checked every 5 minutes. The milk
needs to be in bottles that won't leak and the processing is done in a
shaker that is specially made for heat treating. The process of heat
treating is outlined in the HMBANA guidelines. I am on vacation this
week. I could fax the process to you on Monday, but where will you get
the equipment needed? Also after the milk is heat treated it then has to
be cooled in a slushy water (ice) to 4 degrees C to stop the heat
treating process and for storing. Please let me know what your plan is.
