Dear Everyone:
Dawn Kersula's post brought out an important part of an official bf
assessment tool. It makes the staff sit up and take notice of what is
happening, and as a consciousness raising and teaching activity, is
invaluable.
However, of the 3 (IBFAT, LATCH, and the MBA) none were found to be
"sufficiently reliable enough at this stage in their
development.............. to be valid for clinical use" (JOGNN March/April
1997, "Reliability and Validity Testing of Three Breastfeeding Assessment
Tools." Riordan and Koehn, pp181-187). More research is needed to develop
something as easy and strong as the APGAR scale. Warmly, Nikki
