Dear All:
I am a hospital based LC on call at home tonight, just got a call
from a nurse whose patient's husband in positive for hepatitis B and C,
the Mom is negative for Hep B and her Hepatitis C status is unknown, her
test results are to return on Tuesday. This case is complicated by the
fact the Mom had her prenatal care at a different clinic, then changed
her prenatal care during the last week because her husband became
paralyzed in a snowmobile accident and ended up at our hospital's trauma
unit. The nurse on duty thinks the Mom should not breast feed if there
is a CHANCE the Mom may have Hep C (which there is). I looked it up in
Auerbach, no material. In Lawrence it says probably should NOT
breastfeed with known hep C, but if the mother HAS been nursing, then the
CDC thinks it is reasonable to continue nursing. Any more current
information or thoughts on this case?? So far I have told the nurse what
Lawrence said, and also Dr. Jack's axiom, "If in doubt, breastfeed.", but
she didn't like that too much. I don't think there is enough evidence
to tell the Mom Not to nurse at this point, also told thenurse to ask the
Peds resident on call and the Midwife.
Thank you for any answers, rapid or not!!!!
