'A 5 day old baby wants to nurse almost all the time he is awake. '

Not an indication in itself that something's wrong, but observe a full feed
from mother's response to cues to end of feed and check for optimal
attachment - which I guess you have done, Elisheva from your next para.
Lots of new babies seem to enjoy/need to feed a lot - virtually all the
time they are awake.

'Mother also said she sometimes has pain that lasts longer htan a moment at
latch; I made some suggestions about positioning -- I think she could support
the breast more, and fix other positioning details, and I hope that will fix
those things.'

Good idea. It may well be all you need to do by way of *active* help.

I would caution against any other interference at this stage. In the UK we
would definitely not test weigh at this stage (if ever....what are you
looking for? How do you know what amount of milk is ''right' for this baby,
and this mother, on this day, at this time? ) or use an SNS, or do much at
all, in fact, except wait, listen, observe, encourage, reassure.
