A wonderful client of mine has been told she needs to wean by 2 months
because of risk of osteoporosis due to steroids taken during pregnancy.
This is a 41 y/o G7 P1. As an habitual aborter, she carries a dx. of
idiopathic villitis. She was treated with heparin during pregnancy #5
(twins born at 22 wks who died). This last pregnancy went to term
(hurray!) and breastfeeding is going well. Her reproductive
endocrinologist told her she needs to wean because she was treated with
Prednisone (dosage varied between 2.5 to 12 mg/day) during the whole
pregnancy and, according to him, continued breastfeeding puts her at
higher risk of developing osteoporosis.

I gave her copies of information I have re: studies demonstrating a
positive effect of BF on osteoporosis. When she saw her doctor and tried
to show him the studies, he blew her off and didn't even glance at them.
He told her she needed to talk to the hematologist about the effect of
the Heparin which she took during pregnancy #5.

Unfortunately, this mom, after her hx. of multiple, traumatic
miscarriages, has a lot of faith in the doctor who helped her bring a
baby to term. I've suggested she ask him for documentation to support
his recommendations for weaning. But she seems reluctant to challenge
his authority.

Does anybody have any suggestions for this particular case?

TIA,
Mary Cummins, MEd, IBCLC
in cloudy, wet Scottsdale, AZ
