For the curious Physician: My general recommendations would be: TAke a
thorough history. the
number one cause of thsi type of colic onset would be dariy proteins coming
through mother's milk. Eliminate all dairy (including that hidden in processed
foods) for 21 days. The research shows it takes 21 days to reach a behavior
baseline. Challenge is optional at this point. Most mothers have sucjh a
different baby on their hands that they don't bother. Baby willl improve in
4-7 days which will indicate that dairy is the bugaboo. If baby does not, one
of two things is the issue, it is dairy and something eslse or not dairy but
something else, or the baby's vagal nerve is being compressed and the baby
needs a cervical adjustemnt or Cranial work.
research shows that there are two reactions, the primary reaction occurs
within 20-40 mins of ingestion (the baby who becomes fussy midway through the
feed) and the secondary reaction occurs 6-8 hours later, (that's the evening
colic that is so common with babies sensitive to dairy). thsi may vary
slightly from substance to substance but pretty typically holds true. there is
tons of research on the subject. Two of my favorite authors are William Crook,
MD and Doris Rapp, MD.
Cranial work and elimination diet are the two most effective strategies that I
know of. 50% of my clients need one or both of these approaches so I see
hindreds of babies with thsi kind of problem.
Hope this helps.
