I just had an argument with a 2nd OB resident who ordered that a
breastfeeding mom whose breasts are engorged (plus she has FUO) stop
breastfeeding because "all her medical books said that's what you do for
this". I started frantically looking for information to support my
argument that the engorgement probably caused the fever (G1P1 c/s with
epidural - only speaks Spanish - another challenge for me) and that she
needs to pump and feed the baby. Almost 12 hours since she has done
either and has had ICE on the breasts. Lawrence says "pumping may not
help engorgement." I'm using the Breastfeeding Answer Book and Auerbach
& Riordan, plus info from the Lactation Educator UCLA program that
supports heat, not ice on a lactating breast. can anyone help me with MD
journal articles that support this care plan? Before I get in trouble...
