Dear fellow lactnetters,
I counseled a woman whose 7 wk old son has grown 2 inches but has lost 14
ounces from birth weight. Her pediatrician has told her that due to stress in
her life, her milk is not rich enough (fatty enough) to sustain this child.
He has her supplementing with soy because of family history of food allergies.
She is pumping trying to keep up her milk supply, and very much wants to
continue nursing, but is afraid that she is hurting her child.
Is this a valid concern on the part of the pediatrician? Can stress make milk
too "thin" to sustain a baby? This doesn't sound right to me. I would love
some input, either posted to the list or mailed privately.
Thank you,
Susan Seidl
