Dear Lactnetters:

I have been asked to post this question by a friend who is a NICU nurse.
Thanks on her behalf for any input. Miriam Levitt RN, IBCLC

The neo at my hospital is not allowing a mother to provide breastmilk for her
700 gram 27 week premie because she is a smoker(a half a pack a day). He is
concerned about the effects of nicotine on the small baby, What do you think?
Hale makes some very precautionary statements about the possible effects of
nicotine on infants, but I see no documentation.......of course a lot of what
we give and do with 700 gram babies is uncharted territory, but I still would
think the bene's outweigh the risks of formula, which is what the baby was
started on today.
