thank you for your comments Magda. I have often pondered when to
speak up about this in some of the more isolated and bizarre
situations. I have seen formula in thrift stores, and protested the
sale there. Usually it's only a few of those pound (500 g) cans, but
on one occasion I ended up at a "flea market" that had a "grocery
store" kinda place. It was an icky place in a town with low
breastfeeding rates (Longmont, Colorado) and I carried a few of the
cans up to the front to find a manager. There were a few cases
available for maybe half what they normally sell for (I checked ABM
prices yesterday.) Turns out they were expired by a couple of months
so I told them they couldn't sell them, and called the FDA just in
case. But I also got into an argument with the manager about that,
because she felt that the *spirit* of the Code is wrong, and that she
has every intention of violating it, for that reason. *She* wasn't
directly responsible for the merchandise there as there are individual
"vendors" and they rent out the spaces and hire the staff in common.
I haven't been back to check to see what happened since, but I hope
the FDA has. They took my comment *very* seriously, btw.
I agree that the donation to the auction clearly viuolates the spirit
of the Code. I would be appalled if I witnessed that and would
probably prevent it from occurring. (But then, I also was charged
with trespassing at Wal-Mart for asking them to remove their "Parent's
Choice" ads. I've tried to tone it down a little and avoid managers
with a Barney Fife complex since then.)
So what was I doing at the icky place, anyway? It used to be a
reputable "antique mall" but apparently is no longer.
