Susan, my understanding is that it is quite safe to add small amounts of
breastmilk to each other indefinitely as long as *the new milk is chilled
first*, ie chilled milk added to other chilled or frozen milk. That way the
original chilled or frozen milk is not subject to repeated temperature
changes.
To be honest, I think our guidelines for handling expressed breastmilk are
in general extremely conservative, bearing in mind the immune properties of
fresh breastmilk. I try to explain to mothers how there is really no
comparison between their 'living' milk and dead formula or cow's milk, and
get them to use their common sense in 'iffy' situations. Having said that,
I think it is still a good idea to stick to recommended, documented
guidelines.
