One of my clients, a 17 year-old new mother with a 2-month old son, is
exclusively breastfeeding (yahoo!). However, she is being advised by an
internist she is seeing to use Prochlorperazine (trade name Compazine) for
controlling excessive vomiting which she has had for about one month. She is
told by her pediatrician to discontinue breastfeeding while on this
medication.
This teen has been tested for everything - she's had a pregnancy test which
was negative, and an endoscopy which was also negative. They are still trying
to figure out what is wrong with her.
She will be obtaining a pump from the WIC office today to pump and dump, but
she may be on this medication for some time. Is there another drug she can
use and continue breastfeeding with which is as effective as the Compazine? I
hope someone can help me help this young mother!
Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, Bs, IBCLC
