Dear Kate (and anyone else who might be interested),
Peter is most certainly Saint Peter, disciple of Jesus, first bishop of Rome,
gatekeeper to heaven (depends on your religious beliefs how far you take this,
but he was a real historical figure). "For Pete's sake" probably refers to
Peter's pence, a tax of one penny from every householder in England having
land of a certain value, paid annually before the Reformation to the papal
see.
