Jay says,
<< But, give me some heat/warmth, and I can relax
quite nicely. I have found that with clients who are dealing with
engorgement, that the warmth before nursing/pumping tends to help them relax
so that they can get a letdown of milk for the pump or baby. >>
Not a problem IF the heat is applied to OTHER than the breasts. If the heat
increases swelling, then it increases constriction of the ducts because of
pressure. Which is why I recommend a warm shower with water on the back, a
hot moist compress to the back of the neck. Usually relaxation isn't the
issue -- the swelling of the tissues is.... I understand the idea behind the
heat, I just object to the fact that it may actually be detrimental to the
breasts....and the fact that no one has YET come up with documentation of a
scientific nature to indicate that heat to engorged breasts (days 3 to 7) is
beneficial.
jan -- looking for a study somewhere so this sacred cow can get back on it's
(admittedly shaky) feet.
