Dear Susan
This has been a frustration in many areas. In this community the general
peds don't do any surgery themselves not even circs. So surgery is not
their first defense for a problem.
I will say in a cliche if you will allow one. "Don't win the battle only to
loose the war."
It sounds as if you have a fine start with three other staff, the grant, the
space to have a service and a grand rounds that must have piqued some
interest . Even if you don't feel like it now it will probably show up
sooner than later.
Are there any ped ENTs that you can discuss this with.? Presenting
research and data that is physician based (MDs do not read nursing research)
might be helpful.
Until then find another goal that may be easier to accomplish and then
another. Do some more fact finding on this one and with time you will find
someone interested.
You are a consultant and therefore make recommendations following an
assessment so as long as you have presented the parents with the
information they may be their babies best advocate.
No surgery is without risk and it would not be good to have someone do it
just because they were willing who is not familiar or comfortable with the
procedure.
Maybe some of our Lactnetter who are members of AAP will be of some
assistance with this cause.
It is amazing how quickly a circumcision is accomplished (these days of
short stay within hours of birth) with hardly a word uttered on behalf of
the baby.
