, a GI doc told her that Reglan can cause Parkinson's
>in adults at a rate of 1 in 8.
There have been reports like this, but it seems to be way overstating the
rate of dystonic reactions (ie spasm of facial muscles, protrusion of the
tongue, etc). I co-wrote a paper on metoclopramide for Topics in
Breastfeeding, Lactation Resource Centre (Set V, Oct 93) and spoke to many
people about this at the time. My husband is an anaesthetist and freq uses
metoclopramide and has never seen this side-effect. It is possible that 1 in
8 people have SOME reaction to metoclopramide, but not all of these would be
a neurological reaction.
The reason that Jack Newman recommends domperidone (if medication is needed)
is b/c it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier and can't cause ANY central
neurological reactions.
