Got a call yesterday from a mom who was given another stupid reason to wean.
She is nursing a three mo old. Noticed a lump in her breast. Mentioned it to
her husband, who is a physician, who told her to call her doctor and get a
mammogram right away!
Makes an appt with her doctor, who then tells her to wean for six weeks so
that they can do the mammogram. She is reluctant to wean her 3 mo old, doctor
fusses and fumes but finally agrees to do an ultrasound and needle biopsy.
After the ultrasound and needle biopsy they tell her she should still wean the
baby so they can do a mammogram for the future. They never told her what the
lump was, she still has it, so feels she needs to wean so they can do the
mammogram. I asked her what the ultrasound and needle aspiration showed and
she said they told her she had "lactational changes". That sounded scary to
her, so she felt she had to get the mammogram right away. Aaarrrrrggghhh.....
