We have a mom at our clinic who is at her wit's end over a problem I am not
familiar with. She complains that every time she nurses her baby, she becomes
covered with big welts that are very painful and itchy. These welts are on the
bottom of her feet, all the way up to her head. This phenomena only occurs
during breastfeeding. Within an hour after breastfeeding, they are gone.
The baby is now one month old, and this has been occuring since the baby was
about one week old. I think it has something to do with prolactin release,
but I'm not sure. Has anyone had moms in their practise with this problem?
We'd like to know what is the cause, and how to manage this problem. Please
respond quickly, since this mom may terminate nursing within the next few days
if she can't find relief!
Thanks so much,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
