A friend has adopted a 10 mo baby from China. They've been back home for
a month, so the little girl is now 11 mo. Mom bf her first child for +4
yr.; he was born about 5 wk early, has Down Syndrome, and getting started
with bf was a real struggle.
Following is a random list of issues associated with this baby. Mom
really wants to bf this little one, and has experience with overcoming a
difficult situation. What she needs is information from anyone who has had
any success with teaching a baby +8 mo to nurse.
*oral aversions probably from a large-hole nipple; bottle was filled with
reconstituted powdered cow's milk, rice cereal, & sugar
*feeds are abm with 1-2 oz/day frozen ebm & some solids foods
*4 front teeth & is cutting both eye teeth; baby bites down on things in her
mouth, like a finger--mom somewhat apprehensive about having her nipples bitten
*attempts at bf were met with arching, screaming
*tickling of cheek with the bottle nipple elicits head turning
*using Haberman now--baby won't open really wide to take nipple deeply into
her mouth
*feeds are with baby's face against mom's breast
*Is an orthodontic nipple such as Nuk a possible benefit?
*mom interested in mouth & jaw development
**baby sucks on bottom lip, seemingly for comfort & to relieve stress; she
stopped this, and resumed after church on Sunday
*mom isn't keen on SNS, but would put up with it in order to even get the
baby nursing; we have discussed use of nipple shield with SNS. Baby doesn't
like SNS tubing in her mouth.
