The following info from the depo site states that nursing moms should
not receive it till 6 weeks post partum
This is from the depoprovera web site at
http://www.depo-provera.com/faq.htm
Q. Can I use Depo-Provera right after I have a baby?
A. New mothers who don't plan on breast-feeding
can
begin having injections right after childbirth,
even before
they go home from the hospital. Mothers who are
breast-feeding can safely begin having shots six
weeks after
childbirth. The injections do not harm the baby
or reduce the
flow of breast milk.

4. Nursing Mothers
Although DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive Injection can be passed to the
nursing infant in the
breast milk, no harmful effects have been found in these children.
DEPO-PROVERA
Contraceptive Injection does not prevent the breasts from producing
milk, so it can be used by
nursing mothers. However, to minimize the amount of DEPO-PROVERA
Contraceptive Injection
that is passed to the infant in the first weeks after birth, you
should wait until 6 weeks after
childbirth before you start using DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive
Injection for contraception.
