Have any of you heard of prolactin or oxytocin prolonging a rash which began
one week before delivery? The wife of one of our second year OB residents
developed a rash, similar to a PUPPS rash, one week before giving birth. It
has not gone away, four days PP even with steroidal treatment. The
dermatologist said he has seen this before and the cause is the "hormones of
breastfeeding" prolonging the rash. He suggests the mother stop
breastfeeding (ofcourse). Neither the OB resident nor I have ever heard of
such a thing. He nor she want breastfeeding to cease but she really looks
and FEELS miserable and steroids have not helped at all. I'd appreciate
your thoughts, is this derm totally off base or could there be some truth in
what he says?
